JRENG! is a young, multi-instrumentalist who is heavy into sound design, recording, mixing and mastering in his native Indonesia. When he’s not involved in helping to craft award-winning radio commercials, he’s often busy working on his solo project which he calls “jreng.” JRENG! recently sent Electro-Harmonix two videosongs he created from start to finish. One is a Radiohead cover, the second is an original tune he calls “Nyaris Sempuna,” which translates to Almost Perfect. Enjoy!

This summer, look for the new documentary film "It Might Get Loud" featuring Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), The Edge (U2), Jack White (White Stripes), and directed by Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth").

Here's how producer Thomas Tull describes it: "I wanted to see a movie that captured the essence of why people are so fanatic about the guitar. While there have been a lot of performance documentaries, this one is really about the relationship between these three men and their instruments. We tried to show what drives the artists, what got them passionate as players, what made them pick up the guitar in the first place."

As for me, I was especially chuffed to see the movie's trailer, which begins and ends with Jack White playing a hand-made instrument through a Big Muff Pi. The trailer also includes the White Stripes' "Blue Orchid," one of the first tracks to feature the then-new POG (recently replaced by POG2):

But that's not all! You'll also get a quick look at The Edge sharing a tender moment with his Deluxe Memory Man at the beach:

You can watch the full "It Might Get Loud" movie trailer here:

Thanks to Jack Conte for his 'videosong' featuring the new pedalboard-friendly Deluxe Memory Man. Be sure to catch the knob fiddling (when I watch, it feels like those are MY hands!). Also catch the singing toward the end, "history repeats itself" -- a crafty reference to both the introduction of the new Deluxe Memory Man, as well as to the general function of a delay pedal. (In fact, I suggest you give this song more than one listen.)

btw, Jack's videosong rules are: 1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice), and 2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds). To watch the video in large-format HD quality, click here (but you might need to pause and let it buffer).

I'm also happy to have this opportunity to help launch Jack's brand-new music store, jackcontemusic.com.

After we released Jack's Voice Box videos (with partner Nataly Dawn) -- the beatboxing vocoder and "In Harmony" -- several people asked where they could purchase copies. Now those tracks, as well as the new Deluxe Memory Man videosong and amazing songs like "This Disaster" and "Kitchen Fork" are all available in Jack's music store. You'll get high fidelity mp3 files (192kbit/s, DRM-free), and everything goes directly to supporing a genuinely terrific musician.

But now, I must reveal the surprising secret of Jack's success:

Thanks to Kevin Robinson (Viva Voce on Barsuk Records) for this quick demo of the Bass Blogger. The Bass Blogger offers switchable overdrive and fuzz modes, and is optimized for a lighter, more subtle fuzz (as compared to the Bass Big Muff Pi). For an even smoother bass distortion, see our Bass Metaphors DI/preamp.

Kevin adds: "I like to have as many options of distortion as possible. The Bass Big Muff is such an identifiable sound that it's really nice to add a little subtle grit to the equation. The Blogger does this nicely. In the 'drive' setting, I can push my clean tone up a bit to the edge, then launch it through the roof without having to make extreme jumps."

"At any point on tour I have two (sometimes three) distortion pedals in the chain. 'Die A Little' off our new record was recorded with 18 guitar tracks, and eventually double tracking a distorted bass. Live all I do is turn the Blogger on the fuzz setting with the tone rolled completely off (7 o'clock) and the drive all the way up (5 o'clock). Nails it!"

"If ever there was a brand name linked to the type music we make and completely encapsulate the aesthetic of how good it feels to hold a squealing guitar, it would be Electro-Harmonix. In fact the VERY first pedal I ever bought was a Big Muff Pi."

If you're in the Portland, Oregon area tonight (May 19) go stop in on Viva Voce's video premiere/release party for their new album "Rose City."

In addition to his Bass Blogger, Kevin will also be touring with his Bass Big Muff Pi, Stereo Clone Theory, and Deluxe Memory Man (see pedalboard).

A week ago, we announced the countdown to the new Deluxe Memory Man, and that the classic 'trapezoid' Deluxe Memory Man would be discontinued.

But thanks to your feedback, we now have a better plan.

1. Starting today (April 20) we will begin taking orders from stores for the new Deluxe Memory Man. It's the exact same warm analog circuit, with premium vintage 'bucket brigade' chips, all housed in our more pedalboard-friendly enclosure. They're ready to go, so ask your favorite EHX dealer.

2. We will continue to sell the Classic Chassis for as long as we can, which we currently estimate at roughly one month. But, rather than become "discontinued" they will be considered "unavailable."

3. Both the new and classic versions of the Deluxe Memory Man will be available globally. Whether you're in the US, UK, EU (or wherever) you now have a choice of either the new or classic design.

This arrangement should be better for everybody. If you've been waiting for the new chassis, now you can finally get it. If you're a fan of the classic design, we'll do our best to keep them available (though we do suggest you get yours soon).

(Update: Thanks to your feedback, we now have a better plan.)

In roughly one month the Deluxe Memory Man will start shipping in our diecast chassis (see right), and the classic 'trapezoid' design (photo above by Eric Archer) will be discontinued. The new Deluxe Memory Man will feature the exact same warm analog circuit, but now in a more pedalboard-friendly enclosure.

We still have limited quantities of the classic Deluxe Memory Man left, and we wanted to make sure fans would have the inside word:

It's time to get one while you still can . . while you still can . . while you still can . . while you still can.

We encourage you to post your favorite DMM photos, stories, clips, lists of well-known songs that used a DMM, etc. in this thread over in the EHX Forums. To properly set the mood, he're a classic Deluxe Memory Man (with a classic Minimoog) as played by Marko Ettlich from RetroSound:

Special thanks to SnakeOiler for sharing what truly must be the most unexpected sound ever to be coaxed from a Deluxe Memory Man. With no further introduction EHX proudly presents "Hallelujah I'm a Bum" a 100-year-old hobo folk tune:

Oh why can't I work like the other men do?

How can I work when there's strummin' to do.

Hallelujah, I'm a bum!

Hallelujah, bum again!

Hallelujah, give us a handout and revive us again.

Amen, 2009.
